Introducing The Cube – Fern & Roby Audio's flagship speaker.

Inspired by the desire to find speakers that looked as good as they sounded, these reflect Fern & Roby's aesthetic and preference for reclaimed materials as well as their desire for excellent audio response. The Cube’s minimalist design is juxtaposed with a raw and unexpected material, combining pure form with superior performance.

The enclosure is machined from a solid beam of heart pine salvaged from a late 19th-century Virginia factory, making the wood over 100 years old. Heart pine was used so extensively as the structural framework and flooring of typical American factories in the period that it was timbered almost to extinction. The demolition and salvaging and repurposing of these buildings is now the only manner to source this wood, a distinctly North American material.

Working with audio engineers, Fern & Roby designed the ported interior of the machined enclosure to be a “tuned” spatial volume to give the best bass response possible for a bookshelf speaker of this class. The base is designed to act as a podium for the speaker--it increases the interior volume of the enclosure as part of the design, producing richer sound.

The base is made of recycled cast aluminum, which comes from scrap generated by Fern & Roby's own machine shop. They cast the speaker base at a local foundry which is only four blocks away from their studio. This creates a product that has a very low carbon footprint, which is important to the creators.

As much as possible Fern & Roby tries to keep their production in-house to control cost and manage quality in production. The one exception to this is the Alpair 7 Gold Driver by MarkAudio, which was selected because of its high quality construction and quality sound produced in a small and elegant driver.

The Alpair 7.3 extended full-range emitter and driver currently delivers the widest frequency range in its size class, and has an advanced damping system such that it delivers a "near flat" response across its range. The driver has an SPL of near 86dB while retaining an X-max of +4-mm available for peak non-rhythmic bass loads. In the Cube Speaker's optimized box design, the system can be made capable of operating from 40-Hz to 32 -kHz.

The wire terminals are gold plated binding posts that easily secure high quality speaker wire.

These speakers get the best response after 100 hours of breaking in at low level play back, per MarkAudio specifications.

Heart pine is inherently rich in resin and can be left without a protective finish, or if desired it can be treated with mineral oil or bowling alley wax.

Each Cube pair is uniquely beautiful, exhibiting the natural variation from each section of beam.
